John Philip “Phil” Cornwell, 81 Bloomington, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at his home. Phil was born in Bedford, Indiana on July 12, 1942 to John and Marjorie (Hobbs) Cornwell.
Phil retired as a research scientist at Indiana University and was a member of Ellettsville Christian Church, Ellettsville Masonic Lodge #245 where he had served as a past master and served on the scholarship committee, a member of the Veterans Honor Guard, Monroe County Parks Board and drove veterans to their appointments.
Survivors: wife, Amy (Prather) Cornwell; son, Jonathan (wife, Nichole) Cornwell; daughter, Kristen (husband, Rick) McGuire and brother, Joe Cornwell. Also surviving, six grandchildren, Michael McGuire, Kamryn McGuire, Kaylee Cornwell, Olivia McGuire, Madison Cornwell and Mackenzie Cornwell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Cornwell.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard 3000 E. Third Street Bloomington, Indiana. A Masonic Memorial Service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. There will be a visitation on Friday, July 12, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. at The Ellettsville Christian Church with the funeral service following at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Byron Williams officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Military Honors will be given at the graveside by the Monroe County Veterans Honor Guard. Contributions in Phil’s honor may be given to the Ellettsville Christian Church.
