House of Fries has the Shore's favorite French fries, readers say

Not all French fries are created equal.

Some spuds stand out from the rest, and our French fry poll — done in celebration of National French Fry Day on Friday, July 12, and the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris on Friday, July 26 — tasked readers with naming their favorite at the Shore.

Nearly 1,000 French fry fans cast their vote for one of 10 spots: Kuppers, a Seaside Heights boardwalk spot turned catering business; Chippy's Fresh French Fries in Point Pleasant Beach; House of Fries in Seaside Heights and Ortley Beach; The WindMill, which has several locations; Burger 25 in Toms River and Ship Bottom; Jersey Freeze in Freehold Township; Hoagitos in Belmar and Ocean Township; Pucker in Asbury Park; Chop Shop in Seaside Heights, and The Chicken or the Egg in Beach Haven.

Going into the weekend, The WindMill and its cheesy crinkle-cut fries was in first place. But the longtime hot dog and French fry spot ultimately lost to House of Fries, which has locations on the boardwalk and in Ortley Beach.

House of Fries

This boardwalk spot, located where Porter Avenue meets the beach on the southern end of the Seaside Heights boardwalk, sells classic boardwalk fries with nearly half a dozen seasoning options — Cajun, adobo, Old Bay, Tajin, and garlic parm — and even more sauces, including barbecue, Buffalo, chili, gravy and even marshmallow for sweet potato fries.

There are specialty fries, too, including disco fries with gravy and mozzarella cheese; cheesesteak fries topped with shaved ribeye, peppers, onions and cheese sauce; and chicken, bacon and ranch fries.

Their skin-on, twice-fried French fries are crispy, salty and cut perfectly — not too thick and not too thin. Dunked in ketchup or malt vinegar, they're a great addition to a day at the beach.
