Letter: Redesigned Seventh Street a danger

The Herald-Times

I grew up in Bloomington (after being born in Malaysia) and lived in this wonderful town from the ages of 3-16 before living in California from 16-24. After graduating UCLA with a BA in English, I moved back to Bloomington at 24 to be closer to family and have been here for the last 10 years.

While I want to congratulate the city of Bloomington for monumental victories — turning Kirkwood into a promenade was the best idea ever — I want to draw attention to the city's most dangerous new street: East Seventh! The changes beginning at Seventh and Woodlawn and continuing west off the Indiana University campus through Seventh and Washington are the worst idea in Bloomington I have ever seen. The street is now too small for two-way traffic, especially for large vehicles, and the medians (which I despise) will certainly cause accidents.

The bike lane looks nice, but is not wide enough to prevent accidents. I appeal to the city to seriously look into the medians as a danger not only to those entering IU's campus but also to those visiting Bloomington. The medians were a terrible idea. I'm sorry to have to say that.
